Some family dynamics leave a lot to be desired, but the San Juan Hills Women’s Golf Association is a collection of more than 60 members whose jovial disposition attracts nearly 10 new members each year.

“A lot of the women are friends of members or women who have husbands that play and they want to play themselves,” says Debbie Geyer, president of the club. “Once they join, they’re able to feel our welcoming and energetic spirit.”

Celebrating their 50-year anniversary this year, the group has been successful because at the end of the day, it’s not all about the golf. Women who have been members for more than two decades and can’t physically play anymore still come to post-golf events for cocktails and appetizers at the newly remodeled 19 Sports Bar & Grill.

“We have access to a great facility — the new restaurant is fantastic, and the course is always in great condition,” Geyer said. “We’re just one big happy family living in a dream home with quite the backyard.”

Every level of skill is supported at San Juan Hills, and their calendar is jam-packed with team play, tournaments, charity events and weekly games for everyone.

“After 50 years, we have a strong relationship with San Juan Hills GC. They are super-accommodating,” Geyer said. “They’ve been wonderful to work with and we’re grateful.”

Geyer has been an active member for 15 years, and she does it for the love of the community.

“I’ve been on the board three times and now I’m president,” Geyer said. “It’s a really good way to get to know everybody, to help make sure that the family stays together.”

Club members make a point of offering emotional support for members even off the golf course. They put together signed cards for ladies who are ill or who are going through difficult times at home.

“There’s huge representation for all the ladies,” Geyer said. “No matter what’s going on in their lives, we make sure we are there for them. It’s what this is all about.”

Possibly the most important aspect of the club, if you ask Geyer, is on-boarding new members and ensuring they are comfortable when coming in.

“When we get a new member, an established member is assigned to them and tasked with introducing them to the group,” Geyer said. “Welcoming new members is that important to us.”

They understand the importance of creating an inviting environment for future members, especially if they are new to the game.

“If I could offer advice to clubs, I’d say be as open as possible and offer guests opportunities to try it out,” said Geyer. “Most of the time, these guests will end up as members, and that’s the best outcome everyone could ask for.”
