Swing Tip: Slap Shot!

This drill from Lily Garcia-Kurotobi, PGA at Industry Hills GC, will help correct a common amateur mistake: not staying down on the ball. We’ve all raised up out of our swing too early, with our head in the clouds, as our shot is embarrassingly topped down the fairway. The anxiety and expectation of a golf shot tend to work against one another. Here’s something to work on at the range.

1. For a right-handed player, place your left hand on the grip and the right hand about a foot down the shaft, forcing your body to bend quite a bit into an exaggerated spine angle.

2. Take swings and note the sensation of not being able to lift your head toward the sky. Work to feel the compression of your club into the turf.

3. Begin to incorporate balls, making sure your entire spine, back and head are staying down and through the swing on a horizontal plane with good balance.
