Reason to Smile: Good food combines with great views at DeBell’s Canyon Grille

DeBell Canyon Grill

There’s no reason to cut your time at DeBell GC short after playing 18 on the William F. Bell-designed public golf course. In fact, with the work they’ve done turning Canyon Grille into an engaging dining facility, you may just want to extend your time in the hills of Burbank a little longer.

Housed on the second floor of the lovely, craftsman-style clubhouse, Canyon Grille is an indoor-outdoor restaurant that boasts some serene and spectacular views. With a large, wrap-around patio that winds its way along three sides of the restaurant, guests can choose to dine outside while overlooking the first tee or 18th green.

“The patio has become really popular during tournaments,” said Scott Scozzola, general manager. “When groups finish, they can go right upstairs and have a drink and bite to eat, while still catching the action coming in on 18.”

The Grub

The food and drink offerings hold up to the surroundings. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, Canyon Grille has menu options for everyone. With a solid breakfast and an impressive Sunday brunch, the restaurant has all your morning favorites, from especially good buttermilk pancakes to French toast to eggs. And don’t fret. You don’t have to choose between your carbs and protein, as the menu offers combinations that include a sampling of all the above.

For the Sunday brunch crowd, there’s now an even better reason to plan on spending your day at DeBell. This year, Canyon Grille has geared up for football season, and will be showing all the Sunday day and Monday night games on their flat screen TVs that sit above a well-stocked bar. All that before you even tee it up (or after for you early birds).

“We want to create that experience for the golfer or non-golfer to come just out of town, enjoy good food and good service in a comfortable environment,” said Scozzola.

The lunch/dinner menu is fairly extensive, highlighted by the Famous Garlic Bread. On a recent trip to Canyon Grille, we couldn’t find a table enjoying lunch that hadn’t ordered it, and the appetizer comes topped with powdered cheese and is made with fresh bread baked daily.

To go with it, you can’t go wrong ordering any of the sandwiches, but the Baja Grilled Chicken Breast, Pulled Pork and Grilled Steak are among our favorites. Those looking for something a little lighter can go the salad route, or take our recommendation and order the Carne Asada or Shrimp Tacos.

Weekly Specials

We aren’t the only ones who are fans of the Canyon Grille tacos. Noticing the tacos — which come with a fresh pico de gallo and either a marinated, grill Angus steak or a Cajun shrimp — were gaining in popularity, the folks at DeBell decided to highlight the menu item with a Taco Tuesday. They added a Wing Wednesday (the crispy, bone-in hot buffalo wings are perfect with one of the many beers on tap) and Slider Thursday to build up some excitement in the middle of the week.

“Those days are definitely getting more and more busy for us,” said Scozzola. “We’ve also added, once a month on Fridays, a cool Trivia Night with a live band. We’re putting more energy into making this a great experience for residents in the area. There’s nothing else like this up here.”

Another can’t-miss aspect of Canyon Grill is the fantastic Happy Hour, which by the way lasts all day on Fridays.
