FORE Magazine: How did your club start?
HUGHES: Three friends who all held their handicaps around town at different clubs, but due to the nature of being young professionals, not having much of an opportunity to participate in the events of said clubs. From there, we spread the word to our friends and developed a good mix of new and experienced players.
What is your mission?
We want to make golf universally inviting, accepting and fun by creating a community that runs deeper than the game and lasts much longer than the rounds we play.
What made you want to start a club with the SCGA?
We looked into it and discovered we didn’t need to play at a specific course exclusively and made the decision to start our own. It’s been incredibly special to be able to build this club and make it our own, as well as expose the everyday casual player to what being a member of a club can be like.
Why is your club unique?
One of the things that separates us is the mix of people we get. All ages, all backgrounds, all skill levels. We welcome all. And will continue to do so as long as the club exists.
On a scale of super casual to Sunday at the Masters, how competitive are you guys?
We are proud to say that we run the full gauntlet of competition. We have had a fully handicapped stroke play tournament with plus handicappers all the way to 38s. We’ve also enjoyed plenty of Saturdays at a beach course with a family style BBQ afterwards. We are committed to providing exciting opportunities for every level of player in our community.
What types of events does your club offer?
We offer weekly social rounds, match play events, stroke play events, individual, team, pairs, etc. Any format you can think of, we do it!
Capturing the true essence of San Diego golf, Finest Things Club is all about high energy, casual vibes and a true love for the game.
What are some short-term initiatives and/or long-term initiatives you’d like to accomplish?
In the short term, we want to provide a space to grow for golfers of all skill levels, interests and backgrounds. In the long term, continue to forge our group as a pillar of the community, with charitable acts and solidifying our place in the competitive landscape.
Anything else you’d like to add?
While we see our club as special, it’s entirely due to what our members have contributed and built with us. Our club is in service of its members and the community, and we are incredibly excited for what’s next. ▪
